About this site
EloCross calculates Elo ratings for national teams, sport by sport, from match results alone. It currently covers seven sports: football, rugby, basketball, volleyball, handball, ice hockey and cricket.
Elo numbers can only be compared within one sport, because each sport has its own number of countries and matches. So when this site looks across sports, it uses a team's position in the table rather than the number. Open a country that sits in the top 10% in football, and you will see the countries that sit around the top 10% in rugby, basketball and the other sports.
How to read the pages
A sport's table lists its teams from the highest Elo down. The "Top" column is the team's position in that table, as a percentage from the top. The "1y" and "10y" columns are the change in Elo over that period.
A team's page places that position on a 0–100% band and lines up the teams at the same position in the other sports. The two charts below it show how the Elo and the top % have moved from year to year.
The country list shows, for each country, its rank in each of the seven sports. A dash means the country is not listed in that sport.
Elo rules
Every sport uses the same formula. After each match, the winner gains K × (1 − expected score) and the loser loses the same amount.
| Starting rating | 1500. Teams that first appear two or more years after the start of that sport's data start at 1000 (teams whose first match is in 1992 or later; 2007 or later for cricket) |
|---|---|
| K | 20, the same for every sport |
| Expected score | 1 ÷ (1 + 10(opponent − own) ÷ 400) |
| Result | Win 1, draw 0.5, loss 0. The margin is not used |
| Home advantage | None |
| Period | Matches from 1 January 1990 |
| Listed teams | At least 5 matches in the 4 years before the calculation date. In football, only members of FIFA |
| Top % | (rank − 0.5) ÷ number of listed teams |
| Same position in another sport | With top % p and N listed teams in the other sport, the team ranked floor(p × N + 1) |
| Top % by year | At the end of each year, the table is rebuilt with the same rules and the rank within it is used. Shown from the fourth year of each sport's data |
| Order of the country list | By the average of the country's top % across the 7 sports, lowest first. A sport in which the country is not listed counts as 100%. The average itself is not shown |
Teams that are not listed (such as countries with few matches in the last 4 years) are still part of the calculation and affect their opponents' ratings.
Known limitations
- Rugby includes the countries that have a list page on Wikipedia and the matches shown on tournament and test-window pages. Some matches between smaller nations are missing.
- Basketball, volleyball, handball and ice hockey include official competitions only (world and continental championships and their qualifiers, the Nations League and so on). Friendlies are not on Wikipedia and are not included.
- Wins and losses follow the official score including extra time. In ice hockey, overtime and shootout results count as wins and losses; football penalty shoot-outs and handball 7-metre throw shoot-outs count as draws.
- Cricket covers men's Twenty20 Internationals (T20I) only. Ties count as draws, and Super Over results are not counted. Matches with no result are not included. In the imported match list, the score columns are 1 for a win and 0 for a loss.
- Ten matches of the 2007 T20 World Cup are missing because they are not on Wikipedia's yearly summary pages.
- Lower divisions of the Ice Hockey World Championship are missing for 2002–2004 and 2007 because those matches are not on Wikipedia.
- Among countries that mostly play within their own region (such as associate cricket nations in Europe and Africa), a team that keeps winning inside the region can end up above its real strength. There are too few matches against other regions to tell how strong each region is. Starting late-comers at 1000 reduces this effect.
- Recent football matches can lag by a few weeks while the source data is updated.
- Variations in how dates are written may cause the same match to be counted twice, and errors on the source pages are imported as they are.
